Role of the capacitor:
The capacitor provides a surge in current to create the phase shift required by the auxiliary phase to initiate motor startup.

There are two types of starting capacitors:

Running capacitors (also called permanent capacitors): These have a low capacitance (rarely more than 30 microfarads, µF)
and are designed to remain energized continuously without excessive heating.

Starting capacitors: have a high capacitance that can exceed 100 microfarads.
They must never remain energized; otherwise, they will heat up very quickly and may explode.
(A centrifugal switch will open, thereby disconnecting the starting capacitor.)
Therefore, both the starting capacitor and the running capacitor ensure the motor starts, but the former disconnects after startup.
